I know I personally am not on LJ a lot after the switch because I'm constantly being bombarded by ads :( I think people would post more or be more active if they didn't have to wait for some stupid black screen ad to load over their friends/communities comment pages all the time.

Adblock Plus! And things like that! I wasn't even aware there were so many ads.. I occasionally get one that pops up on the LJ front page and I just quickly refresh, and it's gone! Yikes, though. I can see how that'd deter people.

Yeah, I had an LJ break for several months, and came back to constant ads everywhere. It just made it easier to break the LJ addition and go straight to Tumblr/FB/Twitter instead, but I miss the people on LJ since a lot of them don't use anything else :(
